A graphical Roguelike game with a birds-eye view. Vulture offers an intuitive graphical interface to the world of NetHack.
NetHack
Nethack is the most celebrated member of the ancient and honorable family of games descended from Rogue and hence known as "roguelike": bare-bones ASCII-graphics adventures set in randomly generated dungeons, in which the player fights monsters and collects items until he or she dies.

The Adventure
Recently, you have begun to find yourself unfulfilled and distant in your daily occupation. Strange dreams of prospecting, stealing, crusading, and combat have haunted you in your sleep for many months, but you aren't sure of the reason. You wonder whether you have in fact been having those dreams all your life, and somehow managed to forget about them until now. Some nights you awaken suddenly and cry out, terrified at the vivid recollection of the strange and powerful creatures that seem to be lurking behind every corner of the dungeon in your dream. Could these details haunting your dreams be real? As each night passes, you feel the desire to enter the mysterious caverns near the ruins grow stronger. Each morning, however, you quickly put the idea out of your head as you recall the tales of those who entered the caverns before you and did not return. Eventually you can resist the yearning to seek out the fantastic place in your dreams no longer. After all, when other adventurers came back this way after spending time in the caverns, they usually seemed better off than when they passed through the first time. And who was to say that all of those who did not return had not just kept going?
Asking around, you hear about a bauble, called the Amulet of Yendor by some, which, if you can find it, will bring you great wealth. One legend you were told even mentioned that the one who finds the amulet will be granted immortality by the gods. The amulet is rumored to be somewhere beyond the Valley of Gehennom, deep within the Mazes of Menace. Upon hearing the legends, you immediately realize that there is some profound and undiscovered reason that you are to descend into the caverns and seek out that amulet of which they spoke. Even if the rumors of the amulet's powers are untrue, you decide that you should at least be able to sell the tales of your adventures to the local minstrels for a tidy sum, especially if you encounter any of the terrifying and magical creatures of your dreams along the way. You spend one last night fortifying yourself at the local inn, becoming more and more depressed as you watch the odds of your success being posted on the inn's walls getting lower and lower.
In the morning you awake, collect your belongings, and set off for the dungeon. After several days of uneventful travel, you see the ancient ruins that mark the entrance to the Mazes of Menace. It is late at night, so you make camp at the entrance and spend the night sleeping under the open skies. In the morning, you gather your gear, eat what may be your last meal outside, and enter the dungeon....

Vulture for NetHack is a mouse-driven interface for NetHack that enhances the visuals, audio and accessibility of the game, yet retains all the original gameplay and game features.
NetHack is a single player dungeon exploration game that runs on a wide variety of computer systems, with a variety of graphical and text interfaces all using the same game engine. Unlike many other Dungeons & Dragons-inspired games, the emphasis in NetHack is on discovering the detail of the dungeon and not simply killing everything in sight - in fact, killing everything in sight is a good way to die quickly. Each game presents a different landscape - the random number generator provides an essentially unlimited number of variations of the dungeon and its denizens to be discovered by the player in one of a number of characters: you can pick your race, your role, and your gender.

Vulture is an isometric graphical user interface for NetHack, SLASH'EM, and UnNetHack. The Vulture project continues the abandoned Falcon's Eye project and is maintained by Clive Crous.
Vulture is an answer to anyone who believes that the interface of NetHack is too primitive. Vulture contains comparatively lavish graphics and also boasts background music and sound effects.
Vulture was previously known as Vulture's Eye and Vulture's Claw, for NetHack and SLASH'EM, respectively, with Vulture's encompassing both projects. Clive Crous has renamed the project as simply "Vulture" to reflect its forthcoming embrace of UnNetHack and SporkHack.
Vulture was recently added to Steam, and there are plans to include SLASH'EM and UnNetHack as free DLC.
Rotated perspective
In contrast to other interfaces, Vulture rotates the entire map by forty-five degrees. North in traditional interfaces becomes northwest in Vulture. To make a diagonal move (across the corner of a square) with the number_pad, you would press 7931 for traditional interfaces but 8624 for Vulture.
Distribution
The website provides Vulture in free download as source code for multiple platforms. Binaries, previously available for free download, are now commercial. The developer has stated that the source code for the Vulture project will remain free and open. The distribution is not a patch; it includes a copy of NetHack or SLASH'EM, with modifications to support Vulture.
To install Vulture for Unix, you can use the Debian/Ubuntu packages or you'll have to fetch the source code and compile it. To compile it, you will need to have libpng, SDL, GNU make, and a compiler (such as gcc). There is also a precompiled version for the Nokia N900 Phone & Internet Tablet available through the Maemo Program Manager.

Falcon's Eye

Falcon's Eye is a version of the computer game NetHack which introduces isometric graphics and mouse control. Falcon's Eye has been praised for improving NetHack's visuals and audio to an almost commercial level and has been noted as among some of the best free games available by Linux Journal.
Development
Falcon's Eye was developed by Jaakko Peltonen, a researcher of neural networks at Helsinki University of Technology, originally as a separate engine, and then grafted onto NetHack. The artwork and sound effects are largely his, with some submissions from users. NetHack's code assumes little about the user interface, telling which dungeon maps and messages to display, but leaves the implementation details to the interface. Peltonen explains that this versatility helped him to create Falcon's Eye, as he did not have to work around a fixed character-based interface.
Falcon's Eye was mostly programmed in C, with some C++ functions. Both SDL and DirectX are used for the graphics and sound in order to make the base code as system-independent as possible.
Since the release of version 1.9.3 in 2001, development of Falcon's Eye has not progressed, with the game based on a now out-of-date version of NetHack. In the interim, at least one unofficial update has appeared in the portage package management system. This level of inactivity prompted the forking of Falcon's Eye to create Vulture's Eye (now just Vulture) which has significant improvements on the original.
Peltonen had planned to add more customization options, allowing users to add their own graphics. As some users reported difficulty in compiling and installing Falcon's Eye, he also wished to simplify this procedure. He also envisions an application for NetHack that allows a user to switch between different user interfaces, similar to software skins.
Gameplay
Whilst adding some features, such as a path-finding tool, Falcon's Eye doesn't alter the NetHack gameplay. Peltonen says that this was to ensure that future versions remain compatible with future releases of NetHack.
Falcon's Eye provides a context menu when a creature or item is right-clicked. Users can customize the interface by configuring the keyboard commands or by adding sound effects.

Clive Crous nous livre ici l'oeuvre de Jaakko Peltonen, en y apportant sans doute un certain nombre d'améliorations (dont celle de faire connaître le jeu à un public néophyte).
Une interface qui augmente l'attrait de ces excellents jeux que sont NetHack et UnNetHack en y ajoutant de superbes graphismes et une bande son adaptée.
Je me retrouve habillé en Indiana Johns, accompagné d'un chat, arpentant de magnifiques décors générés de manière procédurale, avec une très belle musique de contes des mille et une nuits.
A noter aussi que la fenêtre du jeu peut-être redimensionnée à votre guise. Une carte des lieux se dessine à mesure de ma progression. Très très sympa.
