Un moteur 2D et 3D temps réel, libéré par le studio Frictional Games.

HPL Engine 1 est un moteur 2D et 3D temps réel, utilisé notamment dans la série Penumbra (Penumbra : Overture & Penumbra : Overture), un Survival horror en vision objective. Il est dérivé du moteur 2D utilisé dans le jeu Energetic (même studio). Frictional Games avait nettoyé son code et ajouté une couche 3D, en y maintenant le code 2D, de telle sorte qu'il est toujours possible de créer des jeux en 2D avec ce moteur. Une autre de ses particularité est qu'il a la possibilité d'utiliser des ombres dynamiques ou statiques (pour les cartes graphiques peu performantes).
