Cultures: Northland follows the story of a wandering band of Vikings, guided by a quartet of heroes named Bjarni (son of the famous explorer Leif Ericsson), his lover Cyra, and their friends Hatchi and Sigurd. Hatchi soon finds that his homeland is overrun by enemies. As a result, he calls upon his friends for help. The game's campaign is spread out over eight missions, and you can also play an additional eight stand-alone missions that are unrelated to the story.

This game tells the story of Bjarni, a stout Viking: As a young boy, he accompanied his kin on a journey to search for the mysterious Sunstones. The search led them all the way to an undiscovered continent – America. His father, Leif Eriksson, today is often called the true discoverer of America – much earlier than Christopher Columbus. His last adventure – a journey to solve the mystery of a strange vision – had led Bjarni through all of Europe and into the Orient.

In his travels, Bjarni met three courageous heroes who chose to accompany him. Together, after numerous ordeals, they managed to defeat the terrible Snake of Midgard and save the world from destruction. For this had been Bjarni’s vision – and his fate. There was a spectacular victory celebration ... and then it was time for these heroes, who had become good friends, to go their separate ways...

Cultures: Northland est un jeu de développement d'une colonie de Vikings, mettant l'accent sur l'évolution de sa population. Le joueur construit des bâtiments et transforme les matières premières. Sa population évolue au sein du jeu, elle mange, dort, communique, se marie et fait des enfants qui à leur tour grandissent, choisissent un métier et améliorent leurs compétences. Ils côtoient d'autres colonies parfois hostiles, le joueur pourra tenter de les éviter ou de les attaquer.

Il s'agit du 3ème volet de la série qui comprend à ce jour (2014) :
• Cultures - Discovery of Vinland (2000),
• Cultures 2: The Gates of Asgard (2002),
• Northland (fin 2002, le présent jeu),

Créez une colonie prospère avec des fermes, des boulangeries, des poteries, d'autres commerces, des écoles, des arsenaux et bien plus encore.
Gérez votre colonie et ses colons, construisez de nouveaux bâtiments, gérez les matières premières pour en faire des produits finis afin de faire grandir votre population.
Regardez vos gens marcher, manger, dormir, et parler les uns avec les autres, pour le simple plaisir des yeux. Les couples se marient. Les bébés naissent, grandissent, et choisissent un métier de leur propre chef. Chaque personnage est unique et choisi son métier. A force de travailler leurs compétences s'améliorent. En améliorant leurs compétences, de nouveaux métiers leur sont ouvert.
Restez à l'écart de vos ennemis ou attaquez-les lorsque vous sentez qu'il n'y a nulle autre option.

Cultures: Northland suit l'histoire d'une bande errante de Vikings, guidée par un quatuor de héros nommés Bjarni (fils du célèbre explorateur Leif Ericsson), son amoureuse Cyra, et leurs amis Hatchi et Sigurd. Hatchi découvre bientôt que son pays est envahi par des ennemis. En conséquence, il vient chercher de l'aide auprès de ses amis.
La campagne du jeu est étalée sur huit missions, et vous pouvez également jouer à huit autres missions supplémentaires non liées à l'histoire.
