1942: The Pacific Air War is a DOS-based combat flight simulation developed and released by MicroProse in 1994. It is based on the U.S. and Japanese Pacific War conflict from 1942 to 1945. The popularity of this game influenced the creation of European Air War, a sequel.
Gameplay
This simulation features aerial combat, ground attack, and naval engagements in the Pacific Theater of Operations. The game can be played as a flight simulator or a wargame. A player can fight a single battle in mission mode or follow the war in tour of duty mode.
In tour of duty mode, a player manages his fleets and air bases on a strategic campaign map. When aircraft engages in battle, the player can jump into the cockpit of any aircraft in combat.
The game also features a fairly advanced recording and editing tool allowing the player to film a mission after its completion. The player can use any number of cameras and place them anywhere in the scene. Also the timeline can be scrubbed back and forth and edits can be customised.

Le jeu peut être joué en mode simulation de vol via une succession de missions, ou en wargame - dans ce cas le joueur gère ses flottes et bases aériennes via une carte stratégique. Lorsque les avions sont engagés dans la bataille, le joueur peut grimper dans le cockpit de n'importe quel appareil.

Scénario pour le mode carrière
Le joueur incarne un pilote d'avion sur le théâtre du Pacifique durant le second conflit mondial. Il est possible de choisir son camp : américain ou japonais, ainsi que le type d'avion (chasseur, bombardier en piqué ou torpilleur).
Le jeu commence en 1941 peu après l'Attaque de Pearl Harbor et le but est d'être le meilleur pilote.
Système de jeu
Ce jeu possède, en plus du mode carrière habituel, un mode carrière historique basé sur des grandes opérations du conflit. Vous pourrez ainsi participer à la bataille de Midway ou celle de la Mer de Corail et changer ainsi le déroulement du conflit. Au fur et à mesure des mois et des différentes missions, il sera possible de piloter différents avions tels que le Corsair ou le Zero japonais.

Il y a trois types de mission qui se déclinent en plusieurs types :
